Reading Response #3

I finished playing Today I Die and I loved it!  It is such a cool concept!  The lack of explanation at the beginning was kind of annoying, but I think it added to the length of the game since you had to figure out what to do.  I requires you to think.

This game uses words in a very powerful way.  I never played to many text based games, but this game lets you interact with the words.  You have to discover new words and incorporate them into the story.  One word can have a dramatic effect on the outcome, which I think makes the game unique.

Many other designers have a problem with the game, because there is no clear goal or threat of failure to scare the player toward the goal.  When players “failed” they weren’t guided toward the proper solution.  Corvus’ solution is to play it like a poem, not a game.

I could see how this could not be considered a game…but I think it fits in the same grey area that puzzles would be in.  To me, this game is kind like a word puzzle, but with some different game elements.  The game has a set of rules and a goal at the end, so I would consider it a game.

Corvus considers this game basically a poem…I do agree that it could be seen as an interactive poem, but since it has many elements that a game has I would still consider it a game.  The text and the way it interacts with the other elements in the game are the 2 main mechanics.

I think our games could get “deeper” if we added elements like this.  It would possibly add more of a story element to them, but I could also see it becoming to complex with the rule sets for the games we have now.  The thing about Today I Die is that it was simple with very few rules.  Our games have many rules and adding this element might make things alittle to complex

Yeah i have to agree, it would make our games a lot better. Like you said though, it could add a whole new layer of complexity that I’m not really ready to take on. Maybe if I was getting paid by Alex to create a game with an insane amount of meaning to it, then I may do it.
